Lenten Alms 2019: Heifer International

let's Fill the Ark!

This year our Lenten Alms will be donated to the Heifer International Organization. Heifer works in 25 countries, including the United States, to help families and communities become self-reliant by providing livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training.

Their mission is to end hunger and poverty, while caring for the Earth. Click on the image below for more information about our "Fill the Ark" Lenten Alms project.

Lenten Almsgiving: We've reached our goal! Alleluia!!

This is the last week we will be collecting for our Lenten Almsgiving project. As of Easter Sunday, we have raised $6,500.00, which includes the children's Mite Boxes. Our Ark is ready to set sail to help those around the world. Wherever hunger, poverty and many times hopelessness are found, our Heifer animals will provide the "olive branch" of peace and opportunity. Our Ark of healthy, hardy animals will go forth and multiply, improving the lives of these communities many times over, as they pass on these gifts to others in need. Thank you again for your incredible support and we look forward to setting sail to our Ark next week!

This very moving video is entitled "No Longer a Beggar: How Goats Changed Chasha's Life." Please take a moment to view the video here on how the gift of a goat can impact a family. It's a beautiful story of the joy, rewards and dignity that gifts of animals can provide.

A Lenten rule of life

Lent is the season of the church year when we as Christians compare how we love God and others with the love of Christ. It is a time to reflect on how we live our lives in the light of our Baptismal Covenant. We practice “Christ-like love” through prayer, study, fasting and almsgiving. • Pray for those who will receive the gift of an animal through our Ark at meals and at bedtime. Study and then reflect on the Baptismal Covenant. Learn about the needs of the poor around the world.
  • Fasting & feasting – Fast on going to the movies, TV time, meals outside the home & buying things you don't need. Feast instead on time to eat simply, take a walk, pray, read, study.
  • Almsgiving – Set aside the money you have saved through your fast to fill the Ark. Children can follow the Lenten calendar and save their money in the Heifer mite boxes.

Life-changing gifts

A flock of chickens

In January 2018, a Heifer project was introduced in Chea Kimshour's community in Cambodia, and she joined the project’s self-help group as well as an associated agricultural cooperative. Through the project, she received training that included business planning, chicken and garden management, leadership, microfinance and the 12 Cornerstones. Chea Kimshour gained a strong sense of confidence, and she saw the benefits of owning a business.

Llama

Getting quality, raw alpaca (llama) fiber is an intricate and long process, so having an alpaca can be the first step in the chain of creating a better life! Click here to read how alpaca fiber can be used to make a fine marketable thread for products like scarves, hats, tablecloths or the other pretty little things they sell in the markets of Machu Picchu.
