Lenten Alms 2019: Heifer International

let's Fill the Ark!

This year our Lenten Alms will be donated to the Heifer International Organization. Heifer works in 25 countries, including the United States, to help families and communities become self-reliant by providing livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training.

Their mission is to end hunger and poverty, while caring for the Earth. Click on the image below for more information about our "Fill the Ark" Lenten Alms project.

Thanks to all who have donated and continue to donate to Heifer International. On March 17th we collected an AMAZING $1780, which brings us half way towards our $5,000 goal of filling an entire Ark! Your fasting this lent will result in far reaching, life changing opportunities for families and communities in need. So, let's continue practicing, experiencing and sharing the light that "Christ-like love" brings through prayer, study, fasting and almsgiving. With this week's collection we will be adding the following to our ark: 1 water buffalo, 2 sheep, 2 llamas, 1 goat, 1/2 share of a pig, 1 bee hive, 1 flock of chickens. In addition, we were able to purchase the needed 1/2 share of last week's cow and added another!

A Lenten rule of life

Lent is the season of the church year when we as Christians compare how we love God and others with the love of Christ. It is a time to reflect on how we live our lives in the light of our Baptismal Covenant. We practice “Christ-like love” through prayer, study, fasting and almsgiving. • Pray for those who will receive the gift of an animal through our Ark at meals and at bedtime. Study and then reflect on the Baptismal Covenant. Learn about the needs of the poor around the world.
  • Fasting & feasting – Fast on going to the movies, TV time, meals outside the home & buying things you don't need. Feast instead on time to eat simply, take a walk, pray, read, study.
  • Almsgiving – Set aside the money you have saved through your fast to fill the Ark. Children can follow the Lenten calendar and save their money in the Heifer mite boxes.

Life-changing gifts

A flock of chickens

In January 2018, a Heifer project was introduced in Chea Kimshour's community in Cambodia, and she joined the project’s self-help group as well as an associated agricultural cooperative. Through the project, she received training that included business planning, chicken and garden management, leadership, microfinance and the 12 Cornerstones. Chea Kimshour gained a strong sense of confidence, and she saw the benefits of owning a business.

Llama

Getting quality, raw alpaca (llama) fiber is an intricate and long process, so having an alpaca can be the first step in the chain of creating a better life! Click here to read how alpaca fiber can be used to make a fine marketable thread for products like scarves, hats, tablecloths or the other pretty little things they sell in the markets of Machu Picchu.
