Marriage:

Preparing for a lifelong commitment

Christ Church offers weddings for active members of the parish, Episcopalians from other areas, and other couples of which one person is a baptized Christian. If you are new to the church, we welcome your presence, and we expect that you will become a part of our community as you prepare for your wedding.

The Book of Common Prayer states that the “bond and covenant of marriage was established by God in creation” and that marriage is “not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which it was instituted by God.” Therefore, premarital guidance sessions are required with a member of the clergy prior to the wedding.

Christ Church is in compliance with the policies of the Diocese of New Jersey and follows the form found within the Book of Common Prayer with additions as approved by the Bishop of New Jersey.

Divorced persons may have their marriage blessed by a priest of the Episcopal Church after the priest applies for on behalf of the couple and receives permission from the Bishop of New Jersey.

Please contact the parish office, via e-mail, office@christchurchmiddletown.org or call us at (732) 671-2524 should you seek to be married in either the Main Church (capacity over 300 persons) or the Historic Church (capacity just over 100 persons).

declaration of intention

to be signed by those seeking the blessing of the church

We understand the teaching of the church that God's purpose for our marriage is for our mutual joy, for the help and comfort we will give to each other in prosperity and adversity, and, when it is God's will, for the gift and heritage of children and their nurture in the knowledge and love of God. We also understand that our marriage is to be unconditional, mutual, exclusive, faithful, and lifelong; and we engage to make the utmost effort to accept these gifts and fulfill these duties, with the help of God and the support of our community.
